Overview

Renowned Lithuanian director, Cezaris Graužinis, and his outstanding group of actors and artists bring life to the first part of Aeschylus’ trilogy, Oresteia, with the play Agamemnon, set to play over the weekend of July 14-15 at Kourion.

The play, the second performance for the Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, attempts to describe the origins and future of human violence.

King Agamemnon returns to Argos, shortly after the end of the Trojan War. He triumphantly marches into the city and his palace, flaunting the Trojan princess and priestess of Apollo, Cassandra, as his spoils of war. Clytemnestra, his wife, welcomes the king with effusive praise and honours, however it is quickly revealed that her enthusiasm conceals a well-orchestrated plan.

She has decided to take revenge for the murder of their daughter, Iphigenia, sacrificed by Agamemnon to get the Greek ships afloat over ten years ago. The red carpet she rolls out for his return foreshadows the impending bloodbath, when she and her accomplice/lover, Aegisthus, murder the king and his concubine.

Guests are kindly asked to arrive at 20:15 to the Kourion Amphitheatre.  Shows will start at 21:00 and will be held on July 14 and 15.

This performance will also include English surtitles.
