Overview

An exhibition of a worldwide motorbike journey that started in July 2016 is being presented at the Loukia and Michael Zambelas Museum in Nicosia. Simon Pruciak and Alexandra Reddaway depict aspects of their global journey which began in Brazil and continued on to forty countries across four continents, covering 45,000 km.

Today, the couple have completed a circumnavigation of the planet and have created a vast photographic and cinematic archive along the way, some of which is presented in this exhibition.

Made possible with the support of the University for the Creative Arts (UK), their year-long journey was also a research project that aimed to explore the common territories and boundaries of contemporary visual arts and geography through crossing the frontiers of diverse cultural contexts in order to establish a discussion on both the differences and commonalities of territories in a cultural and physical landscape.

The journey was mapped along modern and historic trade routes. Over the centuries, control of these trade routes has proved to be a far more profitable venture than simply possessing the sources of raw materials. The existence and flourishing of trade routes has been dependent on a secure environment for the conduct of trade; examining them, therefore, can tell one much about the interactions between trading regions and other factors that have led to economic expansion as well as to the contrary: economic contraction and political collapse. The work explores the surfaces of the trade routes and the travellers’ journey along them.
