Of the largest celebrations welcoming the summer season is the Kataklysmos festival that takes places in the coastal towns of the island. The festival holds religious connotations as according to Greek Orthodox tradition kataklysmos, meaning flood, derives from the Bible’s tale of Noah’s flood. So, every year around the end of May/ beginning of June, large crowds head to the sea side to take part in the festivities.
Kataklysmos celebrations usually include folk music concerts, dance performances and water-based games. Over the course of a long weekend, as Monday the 28th is a public holiday, Ayia Napa will be filled boat rides, traditional music concerts and activities. Join the heaps of Cypriots celebrating Kataklysmos and explore Cyprus’ folklore culture by the sunny Ayia Napa.
