Explore the sounds of Cypriot traditional music in a modern blend by local trio band Monsieur Doumani on June 13th at Cultural Centre of the University of Cyprus from 20:30 to 23:30.
Much-loved around the island and with recent European success, the band is of the few known musicians to sing in the Cypriot dialect and their concerts are always full of vibrant energy.
Following the success of their previous album, on Wednesday June 13th Monsieur Doumani are presenting their third award-winning album ‘Angathin’. The album consists almost exclusively of original compositions whose symbolic name ‘Angathin’ (translates as ‘thorn’) addresses more than ever, the political, social and activist concerns and sensitivities of the group members and it is a call for rebellion against corruption, racism and injustice. The songs are inspired, among other things, by the unstable political situation on the divided island of Cyprus and the need for peace and reunification, as well as environmental crimes committed in the name of economic growth and profit.
Angathin’s musical language is built on the coordinates of traditional Cypriot music but is infiltrated by elements from many other genres such as rock, blues, hip-hop, punk, psychedelia, balkan etc.
This concert is a great chance to experience Cypriot souds and party with the locals. Tickets go for €10 / €5.
