An evening of haunting and romantic baroque music is coming to Nicosia on November 24 at 17:00, with a performance by a string quartet that will take audiences on an emotional journey.
The Art of Fugue is an incomplete musical work of unspecified instrumentation by Johann Sebastian Bach, written in the last decade of his life and considered the culmination of the composer’s experimentation with monothematic instrumental works, while Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” quartet, often referred to as “one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire”, was composed in 1824, after the composer was diagnosed with a serious illness and realized he didn’t have long to live.
It takes its name from the theme of the second movement, which Schubert took from a song by the same title which he wrote in 1817. Some view this quartet as Schubert’s testament to death, with the theme of death itself palpable in all of its four movements.
