Farmakas’ apples are being turned to cider
Natasa Cleanthous and Nigel O’Connor had an idea, a very interesting idea, and they did not waste any time making it a reality, noticing a lapse in the Cypriot market.
Cleanthous grew up gathering apples from their orchards alongside her father. She told CityFreePress that even then she dreamt of making a cider from their apples. Unfortunately, Natasa never got the chance to make her dream true, as her father died suddenly, and she focused on other things, she said.
Eventually, she said, Nigel walked into her life from Australia, and together they decided to make the cider ‘Militsa’.
Using their apples the couple produced their cider, and Natasa said, she is sure her father would be proud if he could taste it.
Now, Natasa and Nigel produce ‘Militsa’ cider using apples from other producers in the area and their own crops.
The apples are first crushed and juiced, and left to ferment for a few months. After the cider is ready it is bottled.
The result? A 100 per cent Cypriot apple cider made from varieties grown on the island. It is available in various locations on the island, including bars, taverns, restaurants, and delicatessens.
Surely, during a visit you have will have to taste this local cider, which is sure to make an impression.
Just ask for ‘Militsa’ and give it a try.
