Limassol’s Great Mosque

Religious Sites

Genethliou Mitella, Zig-Zag and Jami Streets, Limassol

Overview

Limassol’s old down stands out, not just due to its proximity to the sea and the Limassol Marina, but for its numerous pedestrian alleys that connect different parts of town, dotted with shops, cafes and restaurants for everybody’s taste.

Within these pedestrian back streets stemming out from the Limassol’s medieval castle, is the sixteenth century Kebir Mosque (The Great Mosque) which is still in operation today. Recent excavations near the site have also revealed the architectural remains of the tenth-century cathedral of Ayia Ekaterini.

Visitors to the mosque should take their shoes off upon entering the mosque while it is open to the public at any reasonable hour providing there is no prayer. The entrance to the mosque is free of charge. Opening and closing times, as well as entrance fees, are subject to alterations without notice. Visitors are advised to check before visiting.
