Overview

Tucked away in one of the island’s largest vine-growing villages, Vasa Koilaniou, is the Cyprus Elementary Education History Museum. Founded by the Pancyprian Teachers Organisation in cooperation with the Vasa Koilaniou community, the museum is housed in the village school’s neoclassical building, so a visit there also ticks off one of the village’s landmarks. Most schools in Cypriot villages hold a prime location and are usually stunning buildings.

The museum offers a contemporary perspective of the evolution of the local elementary education through the decades and also reflects on the phases of political developments on the island.

Opened in 2010, the museum also houses exhibits referencing elementary education during the Turkish and British occupation of Cyprus, as seen through the eyes of Vasa Koilaniou, as well as in other parts of the island. This was made possible by exhibiting documents provided by the Archbishopric.
