Overview

The Famagusta Gate, a beautiful Venetian structure, was once the eastern entrance to Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.

Famagusta Gate is the largest of the three entrances into old Nicosia through the Venetian walls that completely encircled the old city, designed by the famous engineer Giulio Savorgnano in 1567.

In 1981, the Nicosia Municipality restored the gate and repurposed it as the Nicosia Municipal Multicultural Centre. The impressive cobblestoned entrance opens into a large vaulted passage with two adjacent rooms, and an external room opens onto the moat that surrounds the walls. Today it is a popular venue for various different cultural exhibitions.

MyCyprusTravel Tip

Originally known as ‘Porta Giuliana’, it was renamed ‘Famagusta Gate’ because the gate opened onto the road that led to Famagusta.
