First-time participants at the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble present Alcestis by Euripides on July 28 at the Paphos Odeon Amphitheatre.
Euripides’ oldest surviving play follows the story of King Admetus and with Apollo’s assistance he gets a ticket out of dying, only if he can find someone willing to take his place in the Underworld.
Who loves Admetus enough to give up their life for him? The tragedy is that it is only Alcestis, his wife, who volunteers to die for him. The queen bids farewell to her life and embarks on a journey to the Underworld. Everyone mourns the death of the queen, who can only be rescued by one hero.
The tragicomedy rejects the physical determinism and challenges death’s dominion, leaving a number of unanswered questions.
Guests are requested to arrive at the theatre before 20:45 to be seated.
There will be English surtitles available at this performance.
