Head to Vasa Koilaniou on the weekend

Vasa Koilaniou in Limassol, with its cobblestone streets, traditional homes, and history in wine-making is an ideal destination to escape to on the weekend.

At the entrance of the village you will find the small church of Ayios Georgios (Saint George).  If you are a nature-lover, then you can explore the trail that starts at the church, where you will be able to take in the fresh air and beauty of some of the island’s specimens.  If on the other hand you are looking for a relaxed walk, then tour the small cobblestone streets of the village.

You will also find the winery Argyrides at the entrance of the village, which makes excellent quality wines, and offers tours.  Make sure to reserve a place when you visit.

The village has a rich history, which you can discover while visiting the museums in Vasa Koilaniou.  The village is home to the museum of elementary education, which is the first of its kind in Cyprus, and there is also a church museum with interesting artefacts from the ecclesiastical community of the village.  A traditional folk museum in the village is privately-owned and has antique farming tools on display.  Vasa Koilaniou is also home to the Zivania museum, which displays the way the spirit is made, and offers tastings of local Zivania.

Just outside the village, you will find caves where monks used to stay and are considered holy sites.

To eat you will want to try some of the taverns in the village.  You will find Ariadne’s Tavern known for its squash flowers filled with cheese (€7).  If you order meze, you will also get dessert including pastries and spoon sweets (+357 25 944064).  At the village’s highest point, you will find the tavern Pyrkos, which serves traditional meze (€16), and offers a great view of the town (+357 99 491455).  You can also get meze (€16) at the village’s central tavern, Palati, as well as other traditional dishes (+357 99 649139).
