Built in 1513, the Ayios Sozomenos Church was built by fourteen villagers from the town of Galata in the Troodos area. These fourteen villagers also painted the church’s interior, along with three other churches in Galata.
Ayios Sozomenos is a timber-roofed building in the shape of the Greek letter ‘pi’ and contains two fresco-covered tiers. The top tier shows scenes from the life of Christ; the second tier has frescoes of the saints.
There is an impressive painting of the Virgin Mary with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel as well as wall paintings depicting the second coming of Christ.
The church is open by appointment only and is open all year round.
