Troodos: An Ideal Destination for a Family Day Out
Whether you’re heading to the peaks of Troodos from the capital of the island (Nicosia) or any of its coastal districts (Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos), you will find countless opportunities for scenic vistas and family fun offered by the highest plains of the island, for Troodos stands roughly in the centre of the island.
Almost every village in the mountains is built around a church, which more than often offers an ideal playground for younger visitors to run around and let loose while those interested visit the interior of these religious sites and their surroundings.
But if you’re looking for something more specific to keep your children entertained, head to the Sparti Rope Park in the village of Pano Platres. Known as the first rope adventure forest park on the island, this unusual yet interesting attraction offers more than eighty outdoor games, including a speedy zip-line and a free fall jump that will ensure your adrenaline runs high!
For a less strenuous activity, the Caledonia Waterfall is found in the lower plains of the village of Platres. Reaching the waterfall entails a good half-hour uphill walk, immersed in the dense wildlife of the area, while following the stream. Although the walk may necessitate a couple of pit stops to rest, once at the location, the sight of the gushing waterfall and the cool atmosphere that comes along with it is well worth it.
You should eventually make your way to the highest village in the mountains – named after the mountain itself. The Troodos Village is the starting point for numerous walking and bicycle trails for both experienced and beginner trekkers and riders.
The square of the village also hosts a vast children’s playground among the numerous pine trees, with swings, merry-go-rounds, and other games that are sure to keep the younger ones entertained while parents enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the many coffee shops across the way.
Next to the fire station, one will also find a couple of horses which are at the ready to take you on a small walk around the village and onto one of its nature trails, where breathtaking aerial views of the island can be enjoyed.
A small permanent market sells an array of souvenirs, including traditional sweets and roasted nuts of all different kinds, ideal for a snack before heading home.
It’s true that the mount of Troodos is mostly known for its winter appeal, when lots of snow is about and winter activities such as skiing are sought out. Yet, during the summer, Troodos is ideal for a breath of fresh air and as a place to pass the time that is sure to please the entire family.
On your way home, you may want to stop by the Platres Chocolate Workshop, a magical place that offers chocolates made from local products which have recently begun to be sold across the world!
