Where to Watch Films Under the Stars this Summer in Cyprus

The summer season on Cyprus is event-packed with numerous music festivals, theatre performances and parties happening all across the island. Visitors and locals have a large variety of cultural events to enjoy, and every year, more are added to the agenda. Film fans won’t be disappointed this summer either, as beloved open-air film screenings are taking place. Discover what they will be showing and where to add them to your calendar.

3rd Faneromeni Arts Festival, 7 June – 20 September

In its third edition, the yard of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation is opening its doors to host a large variety of cultural events throughout the summer, pleasing those who choose to stay in the capital. Every Thursday at 21:00, a performance or event is held from local and international artists, bringing art into the Old Town. The courtyard turns into a big open-air cinema with seating along the amphitheatre steps, screening Coco (2017) on Thursday, 26 July; Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) on Thursday, 2 August; Beauty and the Beast (2017) on Thursday, 23 August and Tomorrowland (2015) on Thursday, 30 August.

Costantia Summer Movie Marathon, 11 July – 9 September

The Costantia summer film nights are a favourite for Nicosians who want to avoid the crowds and stay in the capital as everyone else hits the coast. For 20 years, it has been livening up the summer evenings in Nicosia with films from the European and international spectrum. This year’s program includes one Cypriot-production film that has won various distinctions, namely Boy on the Bridge. The cinema sells a couple of snacks and beverages as well. Larnaca Cinema Society Summer Cinema, 17 July – 27 August

Attenberg is one of the alternative films that will be screened

Active since 1979, the Larnaca Cinema Society has been screening documentaries, independent films, animation and classic movies to cinema lovers who get to enjoy pieces that aren’t usually featured on the big screen. Their summer schedule, as it always has been, is on every Monday, housed in the Pierides Museum and starting at 20:30. Find what movies are on and watch their trailers on the society’s website.

Animefest Cyprus 2018, 19 – 21 July

The only animation festival in Cyprus is taking place for its 17th year, this time in Salamiou village in Paphos, staying true to its countryside elements. Wanting to cultivate the art of animation by raising audience awareness and promoting its development, besides exhibitions, workshops and competitions, Animefest is holding a summer cinema in the evenings during the festival at Neofitidios Open Air Cinema at 20:30. Animation fans can enjoy films from around the world under the starry Paphos sky.

Protaras Film Festival, 18 July – 5 August

Paralimni Youth Council is organising the 6th and largest Protaras Film Festival yet to take place in Lefkolla Square right in the centre of Protaras. Whether you know about the festival or not, you’ll probably pass it by when strolling along the town’s main street. From the latest blockbuster hits like Mamma Mia! and Coco to old classics such as The Lion King, the film program has offerings to please all tastes. Check out the full docket here.

Rialto Summer Cinema, 22, 24 & 25 July

The Italian comedy “L’ora Legale” will be screened on Sunday the 22nd

Limassol couldn’t not have its own little film festival. Held over three days in July, a big screen is being set up in a large parking place behind Rialto Theatre, inviting the public to indulge in the outdoor movie projections. The three films that will be screened are all comedies to uplift your mood so you can laugh the night away. (Not that it’s hard to have a great time while you’re spending the summer in Cyprus, anyway!) The first movie, L’ora Legale, is an Italian comedy; the second, The Death of Stalin, an English-language film by a Scottish director; and the last a French comedy called À Bras Ouverts.

Lemesos International Documentary Festival, 1 – 8 August

For the 13th year, the International Documentary Festival is coming to Limassol, bringing to the people visual pieces of socio-political approach and stunning cinematography. More than 20 documentaries are on the agenda this year, telling tales of love, war, music and rhythm, money and poverty over the first week of August. Held in the Lanitis centre, right next to the Medieval Castle, Cypriot and international productions that convey powerful messages will be screened. The festival will also include music events, DJ sets, and will offer a chance for viewers to engage in a creative dialogue with those directors in attendance. Reflect on the documentaries at the Festival bar with refreshing cocktails in a vibrant summer mood.
