7 Fun Festivals to not miss before 2019 ends

In the coming months and shortly before the end of 2019 there will be several festivals in Cyprus, some of which you must not miss.

A new and promising international festival is set to take place in Cyprus in October. The 1st Nicosia International Festival with over 20 high-profile theatre, music, and dance performances will last 40 days at the renovated Nicosia Municipal Theatre.

Here is a list of the 7 best festivals you shouldn’t miss before the end of the year.

Honey Festival

When: September 21 & 22

Where: Kalopanayiotis, Nicosia

The Honey Festival comes to Kalopanayiotis on the weekend of September 21 and 22. The Kalopanayiotis Community Council is organising for the third year the Festival of Honey and Beehive Products in the beautiful village. The community and all partners and community organisations are prepared to welcome thousands of visitors and provide you with unforgettable entertainment experiences and above all sweet authentic Cypriot honey flavours from all over Cyprus.

Spoon Sweets Festival

When: September 29

Where: Kakopetria, Nicosia

This festival, which managed to attract about 7,000 visitors in its first event and even more at its second, is returning this year for the third consecutive year!

The 3rd Spoon Sweet Festival, which is scheduled in the beautiful village of Kakopetria will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2019.

Within the framework of the festival, visitors will have the opportunity to taste the most special and traditional spoon sweets, get to know the culture of Kakopetria and bask tranquility of nature.

16th Festival of Traditional Culture

When: October 1

Where: Lagia, Larnaca

The Larnaca Rural Women’s Association is organising the annual Festival of Traditional Culture for the 16th consecutive year. This year’s event is being held in co-operation with the Lagia Community Council. The Festival will take place on October 1, 2019 from 3pm until 9pm. The 16th Festival of Traditional Culture is about carob and its derivatives. At the demonstration and tasting booths guests will be able to sample various traditional foods. At the same time, the beloved Chef Christos Christodoulou will present creative recipes with carob and other local products.

Nicosia Book Fest

When: October 5-6

Where: Acropolis Park, Nicosia

Nicosia Book Fest comes for the fourth consecutive year on October 5-6 to turn Acropolis Park into a garden full of books and invites its friends, and not only, to attend and participate in book presentations, discussions, workshops, shows and more other activities for young and old. This year’s festival will host even more writers, bookstores, publishing houses, embassies, cultural and academic institutions with the aim of effectively interacting with creators and readers. At the same time, three different events will take place over the course of two days, over 40 presentations, and discussions with authors from Cyprus and abroad and other very exciting activities that will focus on the book, of course.

Nicosia International Festival

When: October 13-November 24

Where: Nicosia Municipal Theatre, Nicosia

The Nicosia Municipality presents a new institution in the culture of both the city and the whole of Cyprus, the 1st International Nicosia Festival to be held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre from October 13th until November 24th. The Festival, among other things, includes very important international as well as Greek productions.

Apple Festival

When: October 12-13

Where: Kyperounda

The festival, which takes place on the second weekend of October, is one of the largest local festivals in Cyprus, and has become an institution, both for the local community of the Pitsilia area and for Cyprus.

This year, on October 12 and 13, visit the village to try and enjoy all that can be made from apples!  Locals have already begun preparations for the festival, making Cypriot specialties from Cyprus apples, as much of the Cypriot apple production is produced in Kyperounda.

During the festival, visitors will have the opportunity to see and enjoy an exhibition of apple varieties grown in Cyprus, apple photography, traditional and modern apple cultivation tools, market, presentation of dishes and drinks with apples’ as the main ingredient, apple zivania distillation, demonstration of traditional crafts, yeast breads, chocolates and caramelised apples, and more.

Zivania Festivals

When and Where: November 2 (Alona), November 9-10 (Pelendri)

The traditional Cypriot distillery product, zivania, has its own big festival, which takes place every year in November in two picturesque villages in the mountains, Alona and Pelendri. The two famed villages of zivania share this great feast. So, the festival starts from Alona and continues to the next weekend in Pelendri. Although the festival has not yet announced a program, it does include, as each year, a zivania distillation in the traditional cauldron, live music with dance and bands, a taste of palouze to visitors and of course zivania.
