Take a trip through Nicosia’s past at the House of Chatizigeorgakis Kornesios, an 18th century manor, restored to its glory days, right in the heart of the old-town.
Built in 1793, the mansion restored on ‘Europa Nostra’ funds in 1988, is triangular in shape with a large courtyard and bathhouse in the middle, waiting to be explored.
The residence belonged to Dragoman of Cyprus, Chatizgeorjakis Kornesios, the Ottoman rulers of the island, during their empire’s reign. Dragomen used to be the rapporteurs to the Pasha, who was governor of the areas under Ottoman control. After the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the post was abolished.
The mansion is situated near the Archbishopric, in the neighbourhood of Saint Antonios in Nicosia, where the wealthy notables of the Greek community traditionally used to live and is a primary example of urban architecture of the last century of Ottoman rule.
This mansion is worth a visit if you want to the see how Cyprus functioned under the control of one of the many empires that colonised the island. Take a cultual trip down Cyprus’ history lane and enter the beautiful house of Chatzigeorgakis Kornesios.
The museum’s open all year round (except on public holidays) for a fee of €2.50. Opening and closing times may change from time to time so it’s best to check before visiting.
