Overview
Take a trip to the old Nicosian suburbs and explore antiquity treasures of the region at the Ancient Idalion Museum. Founded in 2007, the museum features a visitors’ centre and the archaeological site of Idalion, one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, currently the modern-day village of Dali.
The museum’s exhibits highlight the chronological phases of the history of Idalion through artefacts discovered during excavations of the ancient city’s settlements and cemeteries.
Roam through the galleries and visit the first exhibition hall that includes information on the site’s history and its excavation, along with photographs of the most important finds that are now housed in museums abroad. It also showcases various other exhibits. The second gallery displays inscriptions that bear witness to the conquest of the kingdom, as well as a part of the archive of the Phoenician administration of the city. Funerary monuments, local and imported pottery, stone statuaries and daily household objects from all periods are also showcased.
According to legend, Idalion (or Dali) is where Adonis, Aphrodite’s mortal lover, was killed by the jealous Ares, the God of War. To visit the Goddess of beauty’s birthplace, head to Aphrodite’s Rock in Paphos for an enchanting journey through history.
The museum is open all seasons of the year, expect on public holidays. Entrance fee is €2.50 per person, for organised groups consisting of more than 10 persons there is a 20% reduction on the entry fees.
