Carnival season comes to Cyprus

Carnival is held across the world before the Lent for Easter, and likewise in Cyprus it is a few weeks filled with food and parties in all of the cities and regions across the island.

Traditionally, carnival begins two weeks before the Easter lent, and it is a time to dress in costumes, celebrate and eat ahead of the holiday.  In Cyprus, pourekkia (pastries with cream, meat, or cheese) were made, and on the Thursday two weeks before Lent called, Tsiknopempti, meat is consumed for the last time before Easter.

Celebrations are held all over the island, and many locals choose to head to the beach or the mountains and make souvla on that Thursday.

During this time, celebrations are also held in many cities, with the biggest celebration being held in Limassol, which has a full program of events.
