About Throni tis Panayias
Northwest of the monastery of Kykkos (Nicosia province) lies a rugged mountain peak called Throni. It has an altitude of about 1450 m and is directly connected to the adjacent monastery. In times of drought, the fathers of the Kykkos monastery used to pray to the holy icon of the Virgin of Kykkos, which was known as the Virgin of the Rain during the Venetian occupation (1489-1571) of Cyprus, and by a procession they carried it up to the top of the mountain, where they placed her on a wooden throne and begged for an end to the drought.
The faithful even nowadays are known to visit the Throni and tie scarves or other fabrics to nearby bushes as tributes.
In 1935, the wooden throne of the Virgin Mary was replaced by a building, a work of self-taught architect Philippos Loizou. It is a canopy, based on four pillars. For easier access to the site in 1959 a road about 2 km long was constructed.
