Overview

One of Cyprus’ best-kept secrets is the Cyprus Theatre Museum in the heart of Limassol. Housed within the Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre, the Cyprus Theatre Museum is a little-known gem that chronicles the history of theatre in Cyprus.

From wonderful costumes to scale props and costume designs, there are several exhibits in the permanent collection that offer the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the island’s history of theatre. These exhibits take visitors back to antiquity, specifically to the ancient Hellenistic and Roman theatres, and up to the present day, as the splendour of theatre unfolds before your eyes.

View the photographs, scale models, sketches, costumes, posters, audiovisual material and exhibits which focus on the basic stages of a theatrical production. All this sheds light on the collaborative efforts of the many professionals and artists—playwrights, directors, actors, set and costume designers, composers, lighting designers, choreographers, technicians—who create and present theatrical productions.

In the central section of the museum are exhibited costumes from significant and emblematic performances. These include the costume of Mother Courage from the production Mother Courage and her Children by THOC in 1977 as well as the costumes from the Iketides (The Suppliants) produced by THOC in 1978. After enjoying these beautiful and informative exhibitions, you won’t believe that you hadn’t previously visited this museum!

In 1987, Nicos Nicolaides, an optician by profession and an amateur actor, donated his rare theatre archive to the Limassol Municipality, laying the foundation for the establishment of the Cyprus Theatre Museum. Joint efforts were then carried out by the Limassol Municipality and Cyprus Theatre Organisation to establish the Theatre Museum and preserve the history of theatre in Cyprus.

The museum’s open all year round, except on public holidays, though it is advisable to check opening and closing times as they may alter. Tickets for  adults  are €3,00 and for students and pensioners €2,00.
