The church of Metamorphosis tou Sotiros (the Transfiguration of the Saviour) isn’t the only church found within the village of Palaichori in the Troodos Mountains, yet it is an important example of Byzantine architecture. Actually, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Built in the sixteenth century, the church is a single-aisle, timber-roof structure whose interior is completely painted. While the artists are unknown, they were inspired by Byzantine and Renaissance art.
There are another 3 interesting churches to worth visiting while in Palaichori, including the Church of Ayios Georgios dating from about 16th -17th Century, the Church of Panagia Chrysopantanassa of the 16th Century with frescoes influenced by both western and byzantine styles. as well as the Church of Ayios Loucas, at the site of an older wooden-roof church.
The village of Palaichori itslef is found at 930m above sea level and split in two by the Serrache River, which springs from the Papoutsa mountain.
The traditional houses and the village square offer a great opportunity to get a taste of local village life. Here, you will find vineyards and fruits trees in abundance. It is also in Palaichori that you may get the opportunity to see the traditional spirit of Zivania in the making. The spirit of Zivania also plays an important role in important village traditions, not only as an accompaniment with food but merely to share with friends in the church courtyard on special occasions.
The church is open all year round and is closed on public holidays. Afternoon and weekend visits are advised to be organised by appointment. Opening and closing times as well as entrance fees, are subject to alterations without notice. We advise visitors a to check before visiting.
